Wow! Thanks for that URL. I popped my XP CD into the drive, ran the command "qemu -hda qemu_basic.img -cdrom /dev/cd0 -boot d -win2k-hack -m 256" and Voila, XP is installing! I do have dd(1) images of my Windows laptops and I was hoping I could use one of those files to simply boot the emulator into XP, but I think that project will have to wait until another day.
