You don't mention most of the important information (see http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/freebsd-questions/index.html), but these symptoms often indicate a cabling problem. There have also been some issues with specific controllers, although most of them seem to have been cleaned up by now.
