For the benefit of search engines and techies I'll document what the
problem really was. The store from whom I purchased the computer had
installed a regular ATA cable (40 pin) to connect the device to the
mainboard. It was very susceptible to line-noise, causing transmission
errors. I replaced it with an 80 pin cable (a UDMA cable) and the
drive is very reliable ever since.
