Let's see. I'm not really an expert on sound cards any more, but it looks like a lot of cards actually have capabilities for doing things like this (particularly the fancy "surround" type systems). I don't think that it's at all standardized, though, so it wouldn't really be practical to have the mixer(8) control handle it.
