        I think the bug may be that I'm trying to mix parts of my
        old 4.4 /etc/mail/* files with this years.  The  dates  on
        the versions are 15 months apart.

        Anyway, for the time being, things seem to work  [famous last
        words??].   When I have more time, I'll reinvestigate.
