squirrelmail is IMAP only, and will not do POP3. IMP is really powerful,
but is a completely bloated beast, and i have never gotten it to work
correctly. if you're going POP3, i'd use OpenWebmail
(ports/mail/openwebmail).

because you want SSL security, i'd strongly advise that you go with
IMAP. it's surprisingly simple to set up an imap server (i use the
courier-imap daemon, which does Maildirs [i don't use qmail] and i dig
it. a lot). if you do go imap + ssl, yeah, go with squirrelmail. i run
squirrelmail and love it.
