The procedure is to iterate over a list of ports to make && make install each. There was not anything installed before those ports. The readline port was not on the list originally and it was not installed as a dependency of any other port when the python port build was run. I suspect that python might have a build time dependency on readline. I see USES= ... readline:port ... I am not sure what "port" suffix means.
