I tried compiling Thunderbird from ports, but it's too big, and there are errors. I'll try to do it some time again, starting clean.
But in the mean time... Choosing the macOS extension/add-on format seems to be working for the binary distribution. Just go to Most Popular add-ons, and Ligthning will be greyed-out. Click on the "Add" button, and choose Mac OS X.
