The particular errors don't look like either of those things, as far as I can see. The configure process seems to be missing the contents of sys/stddefs.h for some reason that I can't actually imagine. I can't reproduce the problem at all, despite some effort at duplicating what little "The Doctor" described of his environment. My recommendation is to clean up the environment and update all of the upstream requirements.
