do I need to create a PR for this problem?
Just to be sure: do you actually have a FreeBSD source tree installed? (In
which case /usr/src contains (a lot) more than just crypto/.)
If so, it does sound like a bug to me. If not, remove src from the
Components line in /etc/freebsd-update.conf.

P.S. This is a base system issue, not ports ;-)
Since it's not ports, but I feel it rude not to reply ;-)
No src is not installed on the affected systems,
but it was ofc in the freebsd-update.conf file.
thanks for the pointer.
cheers
