I have exactly the same problem, ptex won't finish.
I am using a newly installed FreeBSD 9.1 virtual machine.
same here on ia64 -current.
However, killing the process and restarting helps.
I now have:
$ pkg info -xo full
texlive-full-20120701: print/texlive-full
