Are you talking about ia64 specifically?

Anyway, I don't think so:

It was sort of off-topic, more pertaining to grep (which also here halts the 
configure of postgresql84-server, and has, for years, the subject of a recent
email to this list...)  
The port installed once I removed the forever-cpu-spiking grep binary so it 
could
use the base one.
