As it uses Ant to build the java code I think we could add
-Dfile.encoding=iso-8859-1 to an ANT_OPTS environment variable.

I have a better fix :) I unbundled nearly all the java things, now I
don't have utf8 problems anymore.
Should be in the tree soon
