The Squid maintainer can not resist to recommend that people look at what the FreeBSD port of Squid-2.6.STABLE15 actually delivers. :-) It should be safe to use the STABLE15 port since it includes all published patches and some of them indeed fix severe issues in STABLE15. An update to STABLE16 is already in GNATS as I write this.
