I think this is related to the update in /usr/ports/UPDATING The passdb backend in your smb.conf. I think it defaults to something else now.

Further to what Scot said, if you run /usr/local/etc/rc.d/samba onestart [or onestop, as you desire], the rc script will ignore the *_enable variable in rc.conf and allow you to start it.
