Could the gnu versions of auto{make,conf} be causing the problem?

I've got it building now. There are files in /usr/local/share/aclocal
that don't seem to be part of any installed package. They were all dated
July 2004. I just moved them from /usr/local/share/aclocal to a backup
location:
