Since there are some objections to this proposal, I have an alternative one for consideration. I would add two new members to ifnet, if_dname and if_dunit, containing the driver name and unit which would be similar to the current if_name and if_unit with the exception that if_dunit would be an int to match unit in device_t. Negative values of unit would mean "no unit" for pseudo devices where units don't really make sense.
Because this would add annoying overhead to the init routine, I would also propose adding an if_initname() function that would hide the initialization of these variables and (if MFC'd) aid portability between 4 and 5. Is this a better or worse idea then adding if_dev? -- Brooks -- Any statement of the form "X is the one, true Y" is FALSE. PGP fingerprint 655D 519C 26A7 82E7 2529 9BF0 5D8E 8BE9 F238 1AD4
