If I remember correctly, the USAGI project
(http://www.linux-ipv6.org/) provided getifaddrs(3) on linux.  They
should also be trying to merge their products to the linux main kernel
and major distributions.

(still, it's true that we cannot always expect portability of
getifaddrs(3))
