The reason you probably got such good performance doing a get from the Mac
box is that FreeBSD's ftpd uses sendfile() -- zero copy for file I/O.

MacOS X probably doesn't use sendfile() in its ftp daemon.

In my experience, a straight-through cat5 cable works fine as a "crossover"
between two 1000baseT NICs.

Since 1000baseT transmits and receives on all 8 wires simultaneously, you
can't exactly hook the send and receive wires up like you can with 10baseT
and 100baseTX.
