Well, it's been working for a couple of weeks now, so I guess -full-duplex turns it
off.

Did not know this. I always used autoselect in a lot of computers with various OSes
and
different NICs, and this is the first time I had any problem.

I don't remember the exact message (and I don't have the box here now), but it was
ifconfig
that just refused the option (seemed that it could not get the driver to accept it).
