Similar situation in my case:
ep0: <3Com 3C509B-TPO EtherLink III (PnP)> at port 0x210-0x21f irq 5 on isa0
Running 4-Stable.
I can only add, that this is dualhomed proxy firewall, and I experience such lockups
during heavy activity (i.e downloading/uploading something from inside to host in DMZ
- that is doing Ethetnet<->Ethernet transfers.)
ifconfig down/up was doing the job, unfortunately, pinging the host didn't help.
This behaviour I see from early 3.x days uptil now.
