Yep it probably isn't clear enough, it does mention stuff about spreading it across vdevs, but doesn't say striped. But that's sun for you.
The man page should probably be bsdified more as its more or less pulled from solaris. Not being able to find that was the only reason to even consider mixing technologies like that.
