This is basically the same as "sidegrading" from i386 to amd64 or vice versa. If you're using 7 or 8, the installworld target sets aside all the tools it needs to complete the installation, so it doesn't matter that the binaries you install can't run on your current kernel. Just make sure you run installkernel first.
