A very good (and simple) way to track and plot peformance over time is Orca. You only need to generate simple text files with the data, and Orca creates {beauti,use}ful graphs. Moreover, you can generate the graphs and keep the rrd files from a different machine.

I know, I know, I'm being slow with devilator :/ (I'm working on a data collector for FreeBSD), but I'm stuck in an urgent project right now :(
