I think that you do really need to update your machine to 5.1- CURRENT for the threads. It's a lot improvement from 5.0, but I have no idea if it will solve your problem in that area. At least, you can help with the developers to keep the things up to date.
I recently upgraded my system to 5.2 and now all works perfectly.
Check the date of this email; it was from Oct 29th, 2003.... :-) Something is going crazy in the mailing list, I am getting over 70 to 80 old stuff coming in my inbox. Ugh..
