No, the src/lib/libz is --- as you note --- for userland. It is not used by the kernel. Note that the patch includes updates to the kernel source as well. Also note that `savecore' statically links libz, so it must be recompiled and reinstalled also. I don't believe there are any other programs in the base system that statically link libz.
