Without blocking, I don't see any other mechanism for event-driven execution. The RFC seems to hint towards sampling at the Nyquist frequency in the case of a missing PPS_CANWAIT. Establishing an 80kHz loop is pretty much impossible given the 100Hz resolution of nanosleep() and friends.
