my login.conf is the default one, except for a couple added env vars.
someone pointed out that the following might be the problem:
- /etc/rc starts
- /etc/rc.sysctl is run
- /usr/local/etc/rc.d/squid.sh is run
however, the limits inherited by /usr/local/etc/rc.d/squid.sh are the
pre-sysctl values of the /etc/rc shell.
initially, i thought this was a clue, however, i note that if i log in,
su root, kill and restart squid (without installing) it still only sees the
pre-sysctl limits.
it is only after i kill squid, make reinstall (squid-port) and restart squid
that it sees the post-sysctl limits.
