Yeah, there are definite dns problems. It does still resolve here, though
- you must be especially unlucky.
According to dnstrace, the following oddities were found when resolving
the stuff to resolve ftp.freebsd.org:

Some of those are only indirectly relevant, the problem is almost
certainly due to the various servers at freesoftware/cdrom.com being
broken.
(As to how the .edu ones apply, I didn't look. dnstrace walks through all
records relevant to the lookup, no matter how remote.)
