The way to diagnose this problem is to cut your system back to the
bare minimum set of options/modules and see if it still hangs.

That means no sound, no graphics/video, USB if you don't have any other option.

Then add each device at a time until it starts to misbehave.

You could try say, disabling sound (removing the sound device from the
kernel and not loading the modules), then see if it still happens.
