There was a patch posted on the freebsd.misc newsgroup the other day for procfs that eliminates the need for the "hackery". It's supposed to be already in -current and I don't recall if it's supposed to be in -stable now or just apply cleanly to -stable. I got it to apply to 3.2-CD but had to do some of it manually.
