Per connection creds suck performance wise (=I haven't seen an implementation which didn't). At the risk of being flamed to death, you could use krb5 for that purpose.. Perhaps time to revive AFS? Seems that some of the issues here were solved in Transarc's/IBM's AFS that I used a while back (ok, it was a pain to run sometimes, but there's nothing per se that says you couldn't unbreak those things -- it's an implementation and availability of tools issue more than anything).
