The problem is not having a kernel lying around, I have about five. I would like to crash the system before the filesystems get mounted read/write. /usr you can mount read only and you can put the important directories on NFS, but the root and /var are still at jeopardy. Writing the USB Zip driver is a bit of a pain this way.
