Has anyone involved in this discussion tried using the portcheckout script? It's in devel/portcheckout. It checkouts the current version of a port and its dependencies on demand. At one time, I gave wosch patches to optionally use ftp. Due to changes on wcarchive, I'm not sure those work anymore.
