I'm not sure what kind of improvement you would get by using AF_LOCAL, but I've seen well in excess of 40 mbyte/sec throughput on a 66Mhz 486dx2, using the loopback interface. I believe you would need RAID to actually feed sensible data into the interface at this speed (assuming the disk is the source of this data).
