I've researched this guy a bit more, and I have to say I think it was a
hoax.

Uh, MacBSD is actually pretty nice. Alan Briggs and team have done a
really good job of keeping it up-to-date and functional. If I had to
pick a platform to run NetBSD on for reference, the 68k Mac would
feature high on the list (probably after the hp300, but that's another
story).
