Just one suggestion on how to proceed: If we have something that works
reasonably well, update the port and move the old patches to the *-legacy
ports. That way we get more bug reports and can fix issues while people
encountering those issues have an alternative that works.
That's how the jump from 5 to 6 was handled. The legacy ports are still at
version 5, which is now completely outdated.
