Is your DNS resolving properly? ssh and probably scp all check for useable dns and then time out but could give appearance of very slow startup ...

With CentOS6 that's the one that gives me the badest results. Almost 200kb/s :/ - The thing is that I think the network slowness is just a symptom of something else.
