This fails completely when the disk has large sector sizes. For example, with a new 3TB drive, fdisk says: fdisk: could not detect sector size The answer is to not use fdisk, but instead use gpart, as <http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-questions/2013-March/249989.html> so snidely points out.
