After unhooking sysinstall from the build, we have almost total success.
The only remaining problem is that the kernel install failed, due to a missing hints file in my DESTIR's /boot. One interesting bit of trivia -- an alpha crossbuilds an x86 world roughly 30-40% faster than it builds a native world. The alpha gcc backend is a pig.
