I will try that, but I'm not sure how soon -- I use this laptop whenever I'm interacting with computers (which is most of the time that I'm awake). I will see what happens with the newer laptop later today. FWIW, the copy of the laptop's "head" kernel config in http://www.catwhisker.org/~david/FreeBSD/head/CANARY is current.
