Make sure you have /boot/kernel/radeonkmsfw_R300_cp.ko.
Oops, my bad. I had WITHOUT_SOURCELESS=1 in /etc/src.conf.
Now the said 3D application works, though the performance is crappier than with
the old Xorg...
