Dear Tim, Your "problem" with telnet session is very simple - by default FreeBSD doesn't allow anybody to login as "root" through insecure connection (see /etc/ttys). This can be changed by editing /etc/ttys to make Pseudo terminals to be "secure" (hovewer it compromises the security, you need to know what you are doing) or simply use ssh or su.
