I'd *REALLY* like to know how it even began to build for you:

    # make
    ===>   gas-devel-2.9.5 depends on executable: bzip2 - found
    ===>  Patching for gas-devel-2.9.5

    patch: **** can't cd to /FBSD/tmp/BINUTILS/gas-devel/work/binutils: No
    such file or directory
    *** Error code 1

    # ls work
    binutils-000215/

    # grep DISTNAME Makefile
    DISTNAME=       binutils

You never set WRKSRC to a usable value.
