I just tested a shutdown script on both the 12.1 RELEASE image and the most recent CURRENT snapshot and it seemed to work. Not sure what's happening, please provide more detail on what's not working.

 I forget the exact problem, but it’s been known to match on a specific string to indicate service status. Somewhere there should be an example of a if/else where one fork is for Linux and the second for FreeBSD.
