The whereis utility checks the standard binary, manual page, and source
directories for the specified programs, printing out the paths of any it finds.
Program sources are located in a list of known standard places, including all
the subdirectories of /usr/src and /usr/ports.
Example:
> whereis pkill
pkill: /usr/bin/pkill /usr/share/man/man1/pkill.1.gz /usr/src/bin/pkill
but
> whereis pgrep
pgrep: /usr/bin/pgrep /usr/share/man/man1/pgrep.1.gz
This is because we have
LINKS= ${BINDIR}/pkill ${BINDIR}/pgrep
MLINKS= pkill.1 pgrep.1
and whereis does not understand that.
