I verified that my sources say the same, then tried to reproduce the problem. 
I wasn't able to; the loader and the kernel at startup both show a module_path
containing /boot/modules.

I've taken the hack from my rc.local and pefs still works.  So somewhere during
my upgrade I must have fat-fingered something or misread an error message or
something equally stupid.  And my hack was totally unnecessary; my problem
probably would have gone away on its own at the next reboot.

What's the bug status for "User has egg on his face?" :)
