For RAM: check or error correction bits (extra bits) are one way of of detecting RAM data problems. (ECC is one form of error correction bits.) Without redundancy via the extra bits, MCE has no source of information to report the specific type of error for RAM and simply does not report what is then not detected as a problem. In other words: no machine check exception then happens.
