file returns 0 on success, and non-zero on error.
This seems to have broken on FreeBSD 10.1?
$ uname -v
FreeBSD 10.0-RELEASE-p10 #0: Mon Oct 20 12:42:25 UTC 2014

$ file thisdoesnotexist
thisdoesnotexist: ERROR: cannot open `thisdoesnotexist' (No such file or
directory)
$ echo $?
1
$ uname -v
FreeBSD 10.1-RELEASE-p5 #0: Tue Jan 27 08:55:07 UTC 2015

$ file thisdoesnotexist
