They are not so wrong... ;) As a first information source, you can have a look on Secunia.Com - which provides useful information based on CVE for various operating systems, appliances or network devices.
Some other respectable sources bases of that kind exists, like the CERT itself but Secunia is a good start and provides more easy to use statistics and graphs (IMHO) NB. You have to filter some of these stats by restricting the alerts to only the software packages you use! You can so forget the XXX alerts about OpenOffice if you are using a minimal system.
